Mixed reaction to new lights
Friday 29th September 2006, 10:15AM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council today said no incidents or major problems had been reported and highways experts were this morning still monitoring traffic.
But commuters passing the junction have experienced longer waiting times and some report being delayed even when the roundabout is empty.
William Walker, a vet at Walker & Wikeley in Oakengates, said he was waiting at the island for around 15 minutes when heading from Wellington towards work at just after 8am today.
“I was sat there for considerably longer than I normally am at traffic lights that are unnecessary and must have cost a lot of money,” he said.
“It needed improving and making safer but I can see no reason why this should improve traffic flow.
“It’s having the opposite effect and it’s as if nobody has really thought about it.”
Highways contractors said phasing on the island is still being fine tuned which may improve timing and allow drivers to pass through more easily.
Huw Roberts, senior technician with contractor, Jacobs Babtie, said: “We will be monitoring times for a few weeks to fine tune the timing.”
