Village armed police drama

Thursday 28th September 2006, 11:07PM BST.

Armed officers were sent to an incident in Callow Crescent but no shots were fired. Neighbours said that a number of police cars arrived at the street this morning when most people were leaving their homes for work.

The street runs from Callow Lane to Plox Green Road behind the village hall.

Police claimed they had attended as a precaution only, and said a man had been taken into custody on suspicion of affray.

Neighbours said police cars parked up outside an end terrace house in the crescent spending about two hours at the property. One police vehicle remained outside the house until about 11am.

Detective Inspector Jason Wells was the senior officer in charge at the scene this morning. He said: “Police were called to an incident where a man was alleged to be armed with a knife.”

He added: “Police attended and I can confirm that no one was injured relating to this incident and one person is helping us with our inquiries.”

Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said an investigation had been launched. She added: “Police were called to an incident at an address in Callow Crescent, Minsterley, at about 8.30am. A man was arrested on suspicion of causing affray, and was taken into custody. The matter continues to be investigated.”

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “At first we heard someone had been stabbed, but we soon realised everyone was okay. We were later told someone had a knife, but that no one was hurt and it was some sort of domestic argument.

“The police were here for a couple of hours this morning, and left at about 10.30am. There were at least five police cars, with some parked at the pub.”

Miss Hawkaluk said: “We did send armed officers as a precautionary measure and the situation was resolved quickly. No shots were fired.”

West Mercia Police today said that they could release no further details of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
