Lights switched on at last

Thursday 28th September 2006, 10:58AM BST.

The lights at the Ketley Brook island were due to be switched on this morning but minor problems with the electronics and bulbs left engineers working until lunchtime to get the lights into action.

They were eventually switched on just before 2pm. The move is intended to improve safety, cut congestion and make life easier for cyclists and pedestrians.

But some fear the area could “become a car park” with the eight new pelican crossings leading to massive tailbacks at the busiest times of day.

Huw Roberts, of contractor Jacobs Babtie, said: “We will be in the area for a while making sure the timings are working and that people are obeying the red lights.”

Highways experts claim work is needed because there have been 15 injury accidents at the island in the past five years.
