Motorists set for lights turn-on
Wednesday 27th September 2006, 9:26PM BST.
The orange plastic covers shielding the lights at Ketley Brook Roundabout will be removed at 9.30am.
Telford & Wrekin Council claims the scheme will improve safety, cut congestion, make life easier for cyclists and pedestrians and boost the bus services.
Highways experts say work is needed because there have been 15 injury accidents at the island in the past five years.
The roundabout is said to be dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists due to the speed of traffic and the antics of “lane switchers” trying to gain a few seconds on other drivers.
But the fact that motorists will negotiate up to four sets of lights to cross the roundabout has already sparked fears of traffic jams.
Meanwhile, the Shrewsbury-bound slip road to the M54, off nearby Ketley Dingle Interchange, is coned off to just one lane.
Highways Agency spokeswoman Annie Harris said: “We have a drainage problem there which results in water running off onto the carriageway in heavy rain. The slip road is coned off while we investigate.”
The Highways Agency is still preparing plans to install traffic lights at Ketley Dingle, with crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists. Work is expected to begin next year.
