Rare Meccano up for auction
Tuesday 26th September 2006, 6:41PM BST.
Made shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the set is unusual in that all the pieces are blue and gold instead of the more common red and green, as in this picture.
The ultimate in Meccano, the No 10 set is contained in a green wooden cabinet, which has three drawers.
Stewart Orr, toys consultant to Halls Fine Art in Shrewsbury, said: “It was only made for a couple of years and was priced between £30 and £45, which would equate to £1,000 today.
“It would have been purchased by an extremely wealthy person, as a week’s wages in 1939 would have been around £5.
“It is also extremely technical, containing complex roller bearings and requiring a high level of engineering skills.
“Meccano was originally known as mechanics made easy but there is nothing easy about this set.”
It will go up for auction at Halls Fine Art’s next sale of toys and collectables on October 20 at the Welsh Bridge saleroom. Entries are now being welcomed for the sale.
