Dodgy pie seller alert

Monday 25th September 2006, 10:30AM BST.

He was selling pies door-to-door by giving various stories, including falsely claiming that he was from respected Much Wenlock butcher A Ryan & Son.

But customers said the pies were bad quality – some of them had even gone off – and police said he had no connection with the long-established butcher.

And Will Doult, of Westbury, near Shrewsbury, says a seller called on him on Thursday, and he became suspicious when he felt very ill after eating a pie.

“After I’d eaten it, I felt so awful and started to wonder whether it might be the same man who had been going round before,” he said.

“He said he was starting up a shop and I believed him and thought it was a nice story.”

Frances Darling, team manager for enforcement with Trading Standards at Shropshire County Council, confirmed that reports of the suspicious seller were still coming in, and he had been spotted all over Shropshire.

“We are aware of him and are continuing to monitor him,” she said.

“Any information that people can filter through to us is extremely valuable.”

Anyone with concerns about a seller who wishes to contact Trading Standards can call 08454 040506.
