Counterfeit clothing raid

Monday 25th September 2006, 10:38AM BST.

Trading standards officials said the goods had been valued at about £30,000 on the counterfeit market but would cost up to £100,000 if they were genuine.

Officers from Shropshire County Council Trading Standards visited the market at Harlescott yesterday.

Frances Darling, team manager for enforcement, said: “There were two stalls involved, but one with more items than the other.

“They were clothing and trainers with potential trademark offences.

“We are looking at probably 1,000 items, but haven’t logged them all as yet.

“Officers visited the market as a result of intelligence we had received over a period of time. We are very much more intelligence-led now and we wait until we have got a picture of what is going on.”

She said other brands se-ized included La Coste, Timberland, and Stone Island.

Dermot McGillicuddy, director of LSD promotions, which manages the Sunday market, said the traders involved had been suspended pending possible criminal prosecution.

“Both of those traders are actually relatively new to the market, and we were not aware of what they were selling.

“It means an instant suspension from all of our markets.

“Other traders will tip us off and then we are able to operate and move in straight away but, on this occasion, that didn’t happen.”

Mr McGillicuddy said that the company had a strict no-counterfeit policy and worked closely with trading standards officers.
