Saturday 23rd September 2006, 9:30PM BST.
But they did say that wounds suffered by Andy Bagnall, of Leegomery, were consistent with the use of a bladed object.
The attack happened in Hurleybrook Way, Leegomery, on Thursday.
Pc Pete Simmonds said officers were went to a disorder-related incident shortly after 7.15pm and found two men with stab wounds.
Mr Bagnall is in a specialist neurology unit at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. His condition was described as “poorly”.
Brian Hancox, 20, one of Mr Bagnall’s friends, said he believed the attack had involved a samurai sword and that Mr Bagnall had suffered serious head injuries.
He said: “He’s one of my best friends, I’ve known him all of my life.
“He’s in hospital at the moment and his family are with him.
“I spoke to his brother on the phone yesterday and he said Andy had been in theatre twice. I think he might pull through because he’s strong.”
He described Mr Bagnall, who went to Blessed Robert Johnson School and who has a young son, was a “good lad who always puts his family first”.
Police said a 30-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault was still helping them with their inquiries.
