The aim is to regenerate  Cremorne Gardens and the waterfront. It is hoped work will start next year.

The funding for The Mere at Ellesmere Heritage Project is among the first from the Parks for People programme, a new scheme designed to invest good cause money in parks.

The project will include expanding and improving the boathouse, clearing up the promenade, restoring the landscape of the Cremorne Gardens, improving paths and seating along the waterside and putting in new toilets.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire county councillor and also Ellesmere mayor, said: “I am delighted that a project we’ve been working on for so long is now moving towards fruition.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to restore the fascinating landscape and architecture round the Mere, and will bring benefits to local people and visitors alike.

“There will be lots of consultation with local people over the design of the improvements. The area is very much loved by the community and it is important that everyone is involved.”

The Mere dates back to the end of the ice age but was developed to become a significant example of 19th century landscape and design.

The lottery project will see historic views reinstated and new facilities in keeping with the original 19th century design developed.

Anne Jenkins, regional Heritage Lottery Fund manager said: “The Mere at Ellesmere is such a popular spot and fully deserves to be restored for future generations to enjoy.”
