Seven records at county games

The meeting – organised by Telford Athletic Club and sponsored by Tesco – attracted entries from throughout the country.

Among the new record-breakers were Matthew Brown of Shrewsbury in the under 15 boys discus, throwing 22.23m, and Ben Mates from Oswestry who set a new Under 13 boys high jump best of 1.46 improving a record that had stood for four years.

Other Shropshire highlights included Richard Rubenis returning from a mid-season injury to win the senior men’s 100m with five Telford men in the final, winning in 11.1 secs. His team mate Jim Tipper won the 200m in 22.4secs , Ben Simons won the long jump with a leap of 6.45m, Peter Arnold claimed the 400m title in 53.9secs and Sinead Johnson won the senior women’s 100m in 12.4secs.

Kelsey Collins was impressive in winning the under-13 girls 800m in 2mins 37sec, while Oswestry’s Kez Ogden won the 70m hurdles in 12.8. Rhiannon Livington-Payne, of Bridgnorth, took he girls under 15 800metres in 2mins 26 secs.

Hannah Bills Brown, also of Bridgnorth, won the discus with a throw of 22.33m. Chloe Murphy won the javelin throwing 23.68m.

Huw Bevan from Bridgnorth won the Under 13 800m in 2 mins 35.4 sec.

Amelia Reynolds, the English Schools silver medallist, won the under 15 girls discus with a throw of 21.84m and the shot with 10.22m.

Telford’s Ben Riekstins, from Shifnal, finished his busy season in style winning the under-17 men’s 200m in 23.2secs and the long jump with 5.94m.

Oswestry Olympian Matthew Jones won the under 11 boys 600 metres in 1.53 – four seconds clear of second. Harriet Ballantyne, from Shrewsbury, won the under-17 girls discus with a throw of 22.16m.

Shrewsbury’s decathlete Jason Green won the under-20s high jump with 1.80, the javelin with 38.7m and the shot with 11.7m.
