Police look into drain thefts
Wednesday 13th September 2006, 12:50PM BST.
The gully grates were stolen from the west of the borough, with 12 being removed from one road alone.
Dave Morgan, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said: “They are made of cast iron and are heavy to remove and have a value, both as scrap and strangely enough as collectable items.
“The replacement of the grates is a totally unnecessary expense for the council and local taxpayers.
“Of course the mindless vandals who steal them are causing far more than inconvenience as the potential result could be a fatality. Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, children and bikers are all at risk either from falling or if they are hit.”
Twelve grates were removed from Malthouse Bank in Wellington leading to Little Wenlock.
Other places include Orleton Lane and Arleston Lane in Wellington; Old Office Road in Lawley; Gravel Leasowes, Lightmoor; Aston Lane, Coalmoor Lane, Darby Road, Coalport Road in Coalmoor.
Anybody with information on the thefts is urged to call police on 08457 444888.
