Rare find in pub revamp
Tuesday 12th September 2006, 8:00PM BST.
It was found hidden behind wood panels in a Staffordshire pub and then stored covered up in a builder’s garage for decades.
The sign still retains its original frame.
Enamel signs are a regular feature in Hendersons Auctions but bosses say they have never seen a sign in such good condition. It still has its paper delivery slip glued to the back.
It was delivered to a Mr AR Watts, 25 High Street, Langley, Near Birmingham from Wildman and Macquire Ltd, Sandpits Enamel Works, Birmingham.
The colours on enamel signs tend to fade on exposure but these are still vibrant.
Auctioneer Phil Griffiths said: “These pictorial images of the past are becoming increasingly scarce.”
The enamel sign and other items can be viewed on www.hendersonsauctions.co.uk
