Sadness as family store closes

Monday 11th September 2006, 4:17PM BST.

The closure of the Princess Street store, which sells everything from towels and curtains to tableware and bedding, comes as proprietors Graham and Marjorie Emberton prepare to retire.

Mrs Emberton said: “It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to close. We would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for their loyalty and to all the staff past and present who have provided the level of service and knowledge which customers have valued us for.”

Mr Emberton added: “Having been devoted to Walker Emberton for my entire working life.

“It is not a decision which my wife and I have taken lightly but now is the right time to retire.”

The store has witnessed very many changes since Mr Emberton’s father, Reginald, first opened the store for business with business partner John Walker on August 16, 1946.

“It was a difficult time to start such a venture, especially as goods were not that easy to obtain,” said Mr Emberton.

“The Second World War had not long ended and there was a coupon rationing system in operation.

“In those days goods often “disappeared” in transit and because of this my father made trips to Manchester three or four times a week get his purchases.”

Walker Emberton developed a reputation of sourcing unusual items and in most cases was able to rise to the challenge – the most unusual item being asked to make some horse’s ear caps for the West Mid Show.

Unique

“Often we have been told what a unique shop we had, or the shop was likened to Aladdin’s Cave, or we would be referred to as “traditional”.

“We will miss tall he customers, but we are look forward saying goodbye to them during our closing down sale over the coming weeks,” added Mr Emberton.

The family shop is currently for up for sale and is due to close its doors in a few weeks time.
