Murder accused in video link
Monday 4th September 2006, 11:19AM BST.
Garry Allan Harding, of Gilmore Court, Severn Street, is charged with killing Annie Eels and Samantha Tapper between June 30 and July 3 in Shrewsbury this year.
Harding appeared for a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Robin Onions sitting at Shrewsbury Magistrates’ Court on Monday, via a videolink from prison in Manchester.
Harding spoke only to confirm his name and has not yet formally entered a plea.
Mr Jim Shaw, prosecuting, asked for 12 weeks to prepare the case and said there were 840 witness statements and almost 2,000 hours of CCTV footage to consider.
Harding was remanded in custody.
Grandmother Annie Eels, 55, and mother-of-one Samantha Tapper, 24, were found with severe head injuries early on the morning of July 2 at Rachel’s Health Studio.
Mrs Eels, of Llansantffraid, and Miss Tapper, of Wolverhampton, were discovered next to each other in a downstairs room of the property, where police said they had both been killed the previous day – the day England played Portugal in the World Cup.
A small CCTV camera monitor along with £300 was stolen from the premises on the same day, police also revealed.
