Carl’s in line for a Telford return
Monday 4th September 2006, 11:33AM BST.
Smith was saved the headache of deciding whether to risk him as the game was called off less than 90 minutes before kick-off because of a waterlogged pitch.
And he believes the extra three days will make all the difference in allowing the former Colwyn Bay man to make a full recovery.
“Carl was very much tough and go but he should be a certainty for tomorrow now,” Smith revealed.
“We try and take positives out of any situation and that is definitely one for us.
“I don’t think the referee had a choice at the time. The pitch wasn’t playable and the rain didn’t look like stopping. As it was, the rain stopped and the pitch dried up quite quickly so I can understand the supporters’ frustration and it was a tragedy for them.
“But the weather looked like it was set for the day and the decision seemed the right one at the time so we’ve no complaints.”
Meanwhile, Telford’s reserves begin their Central Conference League campaign with a trip to Worcester City tonight.
The Bucks played in the league’s cup competition in the last two seasons but have now stepped up their involvement and will have 16 second string games.
Smith will be attending to watch, but club captain Steve Pope will be in charge of the side along with coach Steve Wynn.
Several trialists will be involved, along with first team squad members Dave Woodvine, Andy Jones and Damien Stevens.
Pope himself is close to a comeback after initial fears he had snapped his cruciate ligaments proved unfounded. He should be in contention in time for the FA Cup clash with Halesowen on September 16.
