Pope hopes for quick return
Monday 28th August 2006, 10:00AM BST.
He has been able to run and take a limited part in training, and both manager Rob Smith and the player himself are convinced that the initial diagnosis could have been premature.
Pope sustained the injury in the Shropshire Senior Cup final against Shrewsbury Town but could even play some part in Saturday’s game at Fleetwood if they receive good news tomorrow.
“If we get the all-clear then he will be in the squad for Saturday,” declared Smith, who was in the dug-out for this afternoon’s clash with Witton Albion at the New Bucks Head. I honestly do think that could happen as well. He’s not done his cruciate as far as I’m concerned now because he’s just doing too much with us in training.
“But you never know and there could be something that shows up in the scan so we’ll wait and see. It would just be another bonus for us if he is okay.”
Smith was delighted with his side’s performance in the 1-0 win at Frickley on Saturday, which was achieved despite a bug which has hit the club.
Midfielder Glenn Tolley and defender Andy Jones were unable to travel and Ben Twigger was forced off at half-time, having been sick before the game.
That meant a place on the bench for Steve Palmer, who had been due to play for Solihull but was recalled late on Friday night as cover.
He went on to create the winner, delivering the corner off which defender Jimmy Turner headed home.
