Fundraisers to get a new centre
Monday 28th August 2006, 8:39AM BST.
People in the Ceiriog Valley have been left without a centre since the old one was knocked down in 2001 after it was deemed to be beyond viable repair.
Project bosses say that because of a huge fundraising effort they hope the new centre will be complete by the end of November.
They added that they also hope the completed development will create up to 10 jobs.
It will include rooms for organisations to meet in, healthy living facilities linked with the adjacent Health Centre, concert, lecture and education rooms, and much-needed showers and changing rooms for the football team.
There is also set to be tourist and other attractions.
George Jones, chairman of the trustees, said: “It will be an exceptional building for the community and a facility for the very young to the very old.
“Local fundraising has helped raise over £25,000 through reviving the Glyn Ceiriog Carnival after an absence of 25 years and other fundraisng events.”
He added further funding has been provided from a range of sources including the Welsh Assembly Government and the Lottery fund.
The Government has pledged a total of £300,000.
Clwyd South assembly member Karen Sinclair said: “This is fantastic news for people living in the Valley.
“The new centre is going to be a place for the whole community. . . The community itself has been involved in putting together this project and it is a fantastic opportunity for the area to reap the environmental, social and economic benefits of this type of regeneration.”
