Funds plea for Summer Season

Monday 28th August 2006, 8:50AM BST.

It costs costs tens of thousands of pounds to stage annually.

A report from deputy chief executive Geraint Morgan warns that if the additional funding is not provided, then the summer season will be totally reliant on the ticket sales for the Quarry Concerts.

It states that in a worst case scenario, if the Quarry Concerts do not take place the summer season the following year would also not be able to take place.

Mr Morgan said: “The provision of a major season in and around Shrewsbury will focus both visitors and residents on Shrewsbury, thus restricting the need to travel for entertainment.

“The development of a summer season in Shrewsbury will also create an environment of ownership and pride which contributes well to civic responsibility.

“There is a real danger of the summer season being discontinued if base funding is not established.”

Concerts in the Quarry this year saw thousands of people turn out to see Lesley Garret and the Sugababes.

The summer season also attracted record crowds to events including bass-baritone Sir Willard White in a Paul Robeson concert, a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the castle grounds, the medieval weekend, and the Folk Festival.

It is credited with promoting the town as a tourist destination, and was featured in the Sunday Observer’s “top 50 events to attend” this year.

Members of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council will discuss the funding of the summer season at a cabinet meeting in the Guildhall next Monday.
