A wide variety of events are held. Shropshire is fortunate in the generosity of its supporters, giving their time and expertise. At the recent Royal Welsh Show, I was told that calls to RABI from young working farmers concerned for their families had increased over the last few months. The price of products sold has fallen – milk, lamb, beef, vegetables, grain – and the volatility of the international market makes it increasingly difficult to manage a livelihood. The charity is there to support individuals and families with grants and practical help, with the welfare officers working in confidence with compassion and discretion. The Freephone helpline is 0300 303 7373.

A wonderful evening was held at Mr and Mrs David Kent's, everyone enjoying a delicious buffet supper and then fascinating insights into the world of horse racing from Mrs Rose Paterson, now chairman of Aintree Racecourse. A lifelong involvement with horses also led to one of the hardest races in the world across Mongolia, a memorable achievement. The valuable amount of £1,670.50 raised on the evening will be used wisely in Shropshire to support farmers and farmworkers' families.

The retired chairman of Shropshire committee is still fundraising. Heulwen Charles will be hoping for calm weather today as she zips along the longest wire in Europe. It was too windy at Bethseda in May.

At Minsterley Show on August 8 we will have calendars, cards, preserves and plants for sale, and welcome everyone for a chat along with local friends and supporters.

If you enjoy walking we offer a one-off opportunity on Sunday,September 6, to take part in the Apley Estate Charity Walk by kind invitation of Lord and Lady Hamilton. There will be two walks, 3.5 or 5.5 miles, both with amazing views across the east of Shropshire. It will be £7 payable on the day, but please book in advance with RABI regional manager, Kate Jones on 07876 492839 or kate.jones@rabi.org.uk.

This will help with catering as it includes tea and home-made cakes on completion of the walk. We are raising funds for RABI and nearby Stockton Church. We start at 10am and last entry at 1pm. Please wear sensible shoes and walking poles are advisable. No dogs allowed.
