Fair Deal For Farmers: Only local food is found in our shop

It's a long list – but then Shropshire is a rich source of farm produce.

And this is just a small proportion of the food coming from our region.

These are some of the suppliers who help Duncan Ellson and his wife Sarah distribute goods from Shropshire.

The couple started buying homemade produce from around Shropshire but found some was harder to source than others.

It had begun as an online-only idea, but four years later, Duncan and Sarah now have a Shropshire's Own shop in Longden, near Shrewsbury.

Selling everything from fruit to luxury biscuits to sausage rolls, the store buys in only Shropshire-produced items and it seems to be a hugely popular venture.

Today the couple backed the Shropshire Star's Fair Deal for Farmers Campaign, which aims to highlight home-grown produce and the businesses that promote it.

Duncan said: "We much prefer local food at home. We always used to shop in farm shops but had to go to the supermarket for some things, and we had quite a lot of online shops delivered to us.

"So we thought why don't we have a delivery service for farm shops or produce to get straight to people's homes.

"My wife's family has a smallholding as well, and when we were first shopping we found it difficult to find fruit and veg.

"So we have used the smallholding for that and started growing our own.

"The business was quite slow to start, but it has really picked up now, as in 2013 the owner of the village post office wanted to see if we would have the shop.

"Since we opened, it has really grown a lot."

You might be a butcher, baker, deli or even a florist. You may run a restaurant, pub or cafe. Or you may sell your wares at fairs or farmers markets.

As long as you use produce made by farmers in our region, you can be included.

The Shropshire Star will create an online directory of businesses that support our farmers.

And we will send you a Fair Deal for Farmers window sticker that you can display to your customers.

We need to know your name, the name of your business and its address and how you support farmers – please also name farms you support and the produce you either sell or serve up.

The store now sells foods including local meat and poultry, fresh fruit and veg, handmade cheeses, farm-fresh milk, freshly baked bread and a range of grocery items such as relishes, sauces and cakes, along with eggs from the couple's own free range chickens and ducks.

Producers and creators come from all over the county, including apple juice makers Appleteme in Ludlow, Mawley Milk in Ludlow, and milk from Wenlock Edge Farm in Much Wenlock.

The Windfall Project, based in Shrewsbury, makes jams and chutneys from local ingredients and also features on the shelves, along with Mike's Homemade, from Woodseaves near Market Drayton, which makes marmalades, preserves, curds and mustards.

Mr Ellson said he was thrilled to be able to stock such a wide variety – all from local people. He said: "It is great; a lot of stuff comes from people around the village."

The store was recently named Local Shop of the Year at the Farm Shop & Deli awards.
