Beauty and the Beast
Bridgnorth Musical Theatre Company
Review by Jerald Smith
Once the mighty Disney empire realised its back catalogue of films could be translated into stage musicals there was no stopping them, with Lion King, Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast being very successful examples.
Beauty and the Beast has been something of an expensive gamble for Bridgnorth Musical Theatre Company, but sold-out audiences this week will certainly enjoy this heart-warming story, and last night’s audience encouragingly contained many youngsters.
The costumes are colourful and lavish while the orchestra gives a brilliant account of the music.
The fight scene in the castle had elements of the Keystone Kops about it, which made it more comic than scary – but that’s Disney for you.
Will Hayward, as the Beast, handles the demands of the role very well, learning to become a civilised human quite convincingly, while Gemma Game is very strong vocally as Belle.
There are great supporting performances from the entire cast, and the show runs at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre until Saturday.
