The Friday Band: Guns for Girls

“We have played all over the Midlands area and we seem to be getting a bit of a following,” says Gavin Herbert, vocalist with Telford rock band Guns for Girls. “It’s getting a bit busier at gigs.”

The band are a four-piece based in Telford, and they have various influences, from the Queens of the Stone Age to Nirvana.

“We try to amalgamate that and do something that’s perhaps a little bit poppier,” says Gavin.

They’re not professional musicians. “We’re all in our late thirties so we’re doing it around our families,” he says.

“We have all got kids and wives, so we’re doing it for the love of doing it – and we have a really good time doing it.”

Gavin works for a furniture and interior design company in Ludlow, guitarist Michael Mooney works for Bentley Motors in Crewe, and drummer Stuart Ball and bassist Carl Haden work for Aga Rayburn in Telford.

“We enjoy doing our own original music and we throw a few covers in there as well,” says Gavin.

“We’re doing what we like, really, and we don’t try to fit into any category. And hopefully that comes through when we play live.

“We’re not rushing to get a record deal, we’re not rushing to make the big time. It would be good if it happened but we’re doing it for the love of it.”

Without doubt the best rock band from Shropshire since Envy of the State.

They may not be professional musicians but they sure do play like they are.

I’ve seen these guys a few times now and I’m definitely going to catch them at the Sladerooms in November.

I saw these lads play in Oswestry this summer and they were the best band on the bill by far.

The drummer in particular is awesome! Great player.

Come back to Oswestry. My girlfriend thinks you are brilliant.

Guns should not be encouraged for boys, nevermind girls. A big thumbs down from me.
