George Lazenby film is tops with Shropshire James Bond fans
Shropshire has chosen its favourite James Bond movie – and it’s a result which may surprise all but the most die-hard of fans.
Next Friday has been declared worldwide James Bond day in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the movie series, and to mark the milestone the Shropshire Star ran a poll to find the county’s favourite 007 adventure.
The winner was the often unfairly maligned appearance of George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which received just over 14 per cent of the votes.
It narrowly beat Roger Moore’s debut, the voodoo-themed Live And Let Die, which came second with 13.3 per cent.
Daniel Craig’s first outing in Casino Royale, and Sean Connery’s iconic Goldfinger, tied for third place with 12.5 per cent of the vote, and the top five was completed by The Spy Who Loved Me, which saw Roger Moore take on steel-toothed Jaws with the help of his underwater Lotus Esprit car.
Two Bond films failed to attract any votes – the unofficial 1967 spoof version of Casino Royale with David Niven and Peter Sellers, and Pierce Brosnan’s final crack at the role, Die Another Day, with Halle Berry and an invisible Aston Martin.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, released in 1969, was the first official Bond movie not to star Sean Connery in the title role.
The 23rd official James Bond movie, Skyfall, starring Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem, opens at Shropshire cinemas on October 26.
