Sam Mendes breaks Bond silence in Skyfall video blog
Wednesday 22nd February 2012, 7:30AM GMT.
Director Sam Mendes today broke his silence on the new James Bond film, Skyfall, promising fans a “big, fabulous, glamorous, escapist movie”.
He was speaking in his first video blog since filming began on Daniel Craig’s third 007 outing, which is due to hit cinemas in October.
Mendes, who has promised to inject more humour back into the series, said directing the film was a dream which went back to the age of nine or 10 when he became a huge fan of the franchise.
“I was genuinely blown away by Casino Royale,” he revealed. “Because of Daniel Craig, I thought that Bond was a real man in a real situation again.”
He added: “It proved to me that it is still possible to make a big, fabulous, glamorous, escapist movie and yet at the same time to say something about the world that we are living in.”
But he gave nothing away about the Skyfall storyline, which is being kept a closely guarded secret. Spanish star Javier Bardem is the villain, Ralph Fiennes has a mystery role, and the female leading ladies are Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris. Gadget master Q is also making a return, played by Ben Whishaw.
Many overseas locations have been axed in favour of lengthy shoots in England and Scotland, although the film is also being shot in Turkey, and briefly in China.
Mendes says on today’s video: “Ironically, I’ve never made an English movie before. I feel like the American years were my apprenticeship for doing a Bond movie.”
