The Angel Hotel, a black and white timber framed building on Ludlow's central Broad Street, is be converted into a restaurant, bar and shop for fine wines and cheeses.

An application has been made to convert the premises at 8 The Angel, the front part of what was once a larger hotel complex taking up much of the top end of Broad Street, originally built in 1555 and a major coaching inn by the 18th century. It was visited by Vice Admiral Lord Nelson in its time.

The hanging sign of the inn is still on the front of the building, despite being used as offices in recent years – most recently by the Shropshire Star until autumn last year.

The building has been taken on by Martyn and Jayne Emsen, who run the Smoke House Deli and Chicchetti Bar on the same street.

In a change-of-use application, Jayne said: "The proposed business will offer retail area for premium wines/cheeses, a bar offering quality wines on tap, coffee, and cheese and wine tasting in a Dickensian-style setting."

The plans are awaiting approval from Shropshire Council.
