Newtown Town Council has announced that the scheduled show to see in the New Year in grand style will not take place.

Spokesman Zak Howard said: "Unfortunately, Newtown's New Year's Eve fireworks extravaganza has been cancelled due to late notification by the supplier of a very significant price increase.

"The committee is unwilling to meet such an increase in this time of financial constraint on local council budgets and apologises for late cancellation of the event."

Mr Howard remained tight-lipped about the name of the company involved or how much the fireworks event was estimated to cost.
