Greg Davies will play five consecutive nights at Theatre Severn – the longest comedy residency that the venue has ever seen.

More than 1,200 tickets have been sold for the gigs.

Theatre Severn bosses say they have been "incredibly busy" dealing with demand for tickets for the five consecutive nights – which only went on sale this morning.

Craig Reeves, Theatre Severn marketing manager, said: "It is a real coup to secure five nights with Greg amid quite fierce competition from other venues for warm up dates.

"I think with him being from Shropshire he was quite keen to do some dates in his home county so we were pleased to have him.

"The box office has been incredibly busy this morning. We have sold more than 1,200 tickets since we went on sale.

"This is the equivalent to two sold out auditoriums. At that rate tickets won't be available for long.

"We did expect it to be popular but the tickets are selling at such an incredible rate. It is very pleasing.

"There are still about 1,800 tickets available so people can still get them but my advice would be don't delay."

The Wem funnyman will open his UK tour, You Magnificent Beast, with the shows, which are scheduled from September 3.

The theatre announced tickets would be went on sale this morning at 10am - although fans were already snapping them up much earlier than that.

Mr Davies previously trod the boards at Shrewsbury in 2013 when he brought his The Back of My Mum's Head tour to the venue.

Mr Davies was brought up in Wem and educated at Thomas Adams School.

He became a teacher but soon found fame as a stand-up comic and has been best known for his work on The Inbetweeners, Cuckoo, Taskmaster and Man Down.

The smash-hit musical is inspired by the recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the only time.
