It's one of the most picturesque areas in the world – and now it's seen off competition from across the globe in a travel guide.

Home to the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, The Pontcysyllte aqueduct and miles of beautiful coastline, North Wales has been named as one of the top 10 regions in the world by Lonely Planet.

North Wales where the mountains, woods and waterfalls of Snowdonia stretch down to miles of unspoilt sandy coastlines came fourth.

It was behind Choquequirao, in Peru, The Azores, Portugal and Taranaki, in New Zealand. It saw off competition from surf capital south Australia and the idyllic islands of French Polynesia.

Glorious beaches on offer

Tom Hall, from Lonely Planet, said: "We included North Wales in this year's list of top 10 regions because it deserves to be recognised on the global stage.

"It's a stunning area with a vast array of activities on offer to keep travellers entertained. North Wales has also become a haunt of in-the-know foodies, so however visitors get their kicks, once they've worked up an appetite, they'll also be well catered for. North Wales is a gem and should be on every traveller's radar."

Thrills attract North Wales tourists

The recognition in the travel guide comes after the 2016 Year of Adventure campaign to promote tourism across the nation.

The travel guide company has published its list of the top places to visit in 2017 with Canada crowned the most desirable spot, followed by Colombia.

For best value Nepal tops the list while the opportunity for adventure travel in North Wales places it high on the best regions list.

Published every October, the list predicts the hottest trends, destinations and experiences, highlighting the top ten countries, cities, regions and best value destinations.
