Places in Shropshire that people just can't pronounce properly

There are some places in Shropshire that people just cannot seem to get right.

Published

Throughout the course of history England has been invaded hundreds of times.

The Saxons, the Romans, the Vikings – armies from all over the world, who all left a little bit of their culture, and language, behind when they left.

These people were the among the first to build villages and towns and name them, so it's not surprising that there are some places out there that the English just can't seem to get to grips with pronouncing.

Here are some of Shropshire's....

Cleobury Mortimer

Despite being spelt 'Cleobury' you should actually pronounce it 'Clibury'

Ruyton XI Towns

We've heard everything from 'Ruyton X Towns' to 'Ruyton XI Towns'. Of course it is pronounced 'Ruyton Eleven Towns'.

High Ercall

This is actually pronounced 'High Arcall'.

Ratlinghope

This one really isn't as it's spelt. The correct way to say it is 'Rachup'.

Leominster

While this one is just over the border, it is one that people get wrong all the time and should actually be pronounced 'Lemster'.

Shrewsbury

Of course there is the age old argument of 'Shrews-bury' vs 'Shrows-bury'. We aren't going to tell you which is right, but one way or the other people are getting it wrong all the time.
