The park, which was put in to replace the paddling pool, was part of a £340,000 revamp of the existing play equipment.

And its opening has coincided with a largely warm and dry summer, allowing it to be full of life and laughter.

Shrewsbury Town Council leader Councillor Alan Mosley today said he was thrilled with the response to the new attraction.

He said: "It has been a great delight to see how much it has been used throughout the summer and this is clearly a great success for the town council in providing services for young people, residents, and visitors to the town alike. It has exceeded expectations, including the number of complements and the support received from parents and children using the equipment."

As temperatures today topped 80F, Councillor Mosley said that the amount of people using the park showed that it had been well worth the money spent by the town council on its revamp, adding: "It has revitalised the play area, it has brought a lot more people into The Quarry and it is great to see these wonderful facilities being used more and more and people having fun."

The water equipment is likely to remain on until the end of the October half term, although the council has yet to make a firm decision.
