The Spitfire 10k race event held at RAF Cosford saw runners race across the airfield and down the runway before crossing the finish line and picking up a specially commissioned Spitfire medal.

People from as far as Devon and Scotland took part in the event yesterday, which was held for the first time and raised money for the RAF Museum.

Abi Betteridge, museum public events manager, said: "It has gone really well. We have had amazing feedback.

"The chance to run up and down a runway is not something you get to do every day.

"Runners got to run in between two aircrafts – the Nimrod and Neptune.

"The RAF also put some of their Jaguar aircraft along the course as well.

"More than 600 people took part, including some from local running groups such as Shropshire Shufflers. The youngest was 15 and the oldest was in their 80s. For a first event it has been really good and we will definitely hold it again.

"A lot of the runners said they would come back next year."

She added: "It is a good fundraising event to ensure we continue to raise funds for the museum.

"We are not sure how much we have raised yet."

Participants headed to the start line and began their race in the museum's spacious grounds, before setting off on to the adjacent military airfield.

Exclusively for the event, participants ran the scenic route past the wartime hangars, alongside the air traffic control tower and down the runway.

There were specially commissioned winners trophies up for grabs in a variety of categories in addition to the unique Spitfire medal that all runners received upon crossing the finish line.
