Top activities happening in Shropshire over the summer holidays

The summer holidays are upon us - six whole weeks to spend in the sunshine, relaxing and exploring.

With so much time however, it is easy to become bored and at a loss with things to do, but never fear! Here we have compiled a list of some of the top summer holiday activities happening across Shropshire to keep the whole family entertained.

Whittington Castle - Oswestry

An historic adventure – Whittington Castle

Whittington Castle has witnessed over 2000 years of history and because of this, they have decided to host a jam-packed multi-period event over the summer holidays.

Visitors will be able to time travel through history. From a medieval encampment to Second World War, from the Tudors to the First World War and so much more.

There will be various re-enactments and talks throughout the days for all of the family to get involved with.

There will be stalls selling modern day crafts as well as period items, and refreshments are available on site.

RAF Museum Cosford

Get your detective hats on this summer at RAF Museum Cosford

Young visitors can train in spy skills at the RAF Cosford Museum this summer around the National Cold War Exhibition.

Correct trail entries will be entered into a draw and five lucky winners will receive a £20 gift voucher to spend in the museum shop. During spy school sessions, participants will be given their very own secret spy activity pack, learn how to record finger prints and write secret messages using invisible ink. The drop-in sessions cost £2 per child and will run on August 10, 24 and 31.

On August 17 it will be RAF Sports day, run by the School of Physical Training at RAF Cosford. The sessions will be run by RAF personnel who have themselves competed at the highest level including the Olympics.

Families can participate in a variety of sports including football, athletics, lacrosse, archery, judo, netball, badminton and volleyball.

The RAF sports day is free of charge, however numbers to some of the sports sessions are limited.

Plant Hunters Fair - Shrewsbury and Alrewas

Gardening is the theme at two great events

Plant Hunters Fairs have two great free gardening events just in time for the summer holidays for you to get involved with.

Saturday, July 30 from 9.30am until 4.00pm, sees a new plant fair taking place at Battlefield 1403 near Shrewsbury. The fair is held at the farm shop, café and historic site of the Battle of Shrewsbury, where you can buy special local produce.

Saturday, August 5 sees the popular Plant Hunters Fair return to the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, with a wider choice of quality, nursery-grown plants than ever and features some of the countries most highly respected nurseries and growers.

Webb's Garden Centre - Wychbold

Living in the Midlands means that we quite literally couldn't be further away from the seaside, which is an awful shame, especially throughout summer. This is why Webbs Garden Centre in Wychbold has decided to bring a brilliant beach to the region, meaning a family day at the beach has never been so easy.

Morning, lunch and afternoon time sessions on the beach are available and during these sessions children will join the Webb's lifeguards for two hours of songs, story time, beach games and play time.

Dedicated to providing a fun day out for all the family, Webbs, Wychbold will also be welcoming its annual summer John Lawson's Circus from Tuesday, August 9 to August 14.

The family owned attraction will also be hosting its 21st Annual Motor Show on Sunday, August 28, where visitors can see some eye catching classic and vintage vehicles from past decades. As well as the Motor Show there was also a Fire & Rescue Service Challenge taking place on Saturday, July 16, where teams competed for places in the national UK Rescue Organisation Challenge 2016.

Hodnet Hall Gardens - Market Drayton

Hodnet Hall Gardens is the perfect place to take a stroll

Hodnet Hall Gardens will be open every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday until the end of September.

The gardens will be open from 12.00pm until 5.00pm with their tearoom serving refreshments and light lunches as well as a selection of handmade cakes.

As well as this, the gardens are the perfect place to get up close and personal with the wildlife that roams the park and the idyllic walks littering the grounds.

Onslow Park - Shrewsbury

The Working Field will take a nostalgic look at farming of 'days gone by' and demonstrate machines and shire horses

Onslow Park is proud to host The County of Salop Steam Engine Society's 2016 Rally from August 28 until August 29.

Shrewsbury Steam Rally will showcase more than 1000 exhibits and attractions including working steam engines, and classic vehicles from yesteryear, tractor pulling, an interactive birds of prey display, the Olde Time Fair filled with rides and moving convoys of historic commercial vehicles, including buses, fire engines, vintage cycles, working horses, vintage tractors, pre and post Second World War cars, classic motorcycles, and perambulators.

Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery - The Square

Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery are set to host a fun seaside exhibition based on the Mark Sheridan song "Oh! I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside" from August 28.

The exhibition was inspired by Shropshire Museums' collection of early twentieth century glass lantern slides of Edwardians enjoying the sea air.

Among the highlights of the event are a replica bathing machine built at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, a selection of railway posters evoking the time when packed trains left Shrewsbury for the Welsh coast, a rock pool and beach, Punch and Judy, a display of period bathing costumes and much more.

Warwick Castle

There's plenty to keep the young and young at heart entertained at Warwick Castle this summer

Step back in time with a range of period attractions at the Medieval Warwick Castle.

The Great Joust returns to its Riverside Arena twice-daily during August with a high-energy new battle celebrating one of the most powerful women in Warwick Castle's history - Anne de Beauchamp.

Horrible Histories promises a range of interactive activities with encounters with the Stormin' Normans, Slimy Stuarts and treacherous Gunpowder Plotters as well as the Horrible Histories Maze.

Children are invited to unlock their inner warrior with a master class in swordsmanship from Warwick Castle's resident Knight at the new Knight's Training Camp From July 23 to September 4 where they can learn how to handle a sword and defend an oncoming attack.

For those who can't get enough of the action, you can also take part in a Medieval Sleepover for even more displays and activities.

As well as all of this, the site also boasts it's usual activities such as the Trebuche Fireball Spectacular, Birds of Prey Arena, Horrible Histories Wicked Warwick stage, The Castle Dungeon, The Kingmaker, Princess Tower and Time Tower and over 60 acres of ground to explore.

Alton Towers - Alton

Visit the Alton Towers Resort this summer and enjoy endless family fun and adrenalin filled adventures.

For 2016, CBeebies land has also released two brand new shows to its repertoire alongside other attractions such as Postman Pat's Parcel Post, In the Night Garden Magical Boat Ride and Mr. Bloom's Allotment.

You can also book in for a short break at Alton Towers Resort's new Enchanted Village - the new woodland accommodation nestled deep within the Enchanted Forest offering a distinctive stay in their woodland lodges and luxury tree houses.

It's baby season at Trentham Monkey Forest and this summer on your visit, you can witness all the youngsters finding their feet as well as a range of other events.

This summer Trentham Estate celebrates the 300th year anniversary of landscape gardener Capability Brown, who played a major part in landscaping the estate.

To help celebrate, visitors to Monkey Forest will be able to follow a Capability Brown trail through the forest pointing out fun facts as you wander amongst the monkeys.

There is also a chance to win tickets in their summer photography competition, 'Are You Capable?'. Monkey Forest are challenging visitors to take a monkey picture but with the landscape and background taken into consideration to.

Hatton Adventure World - Warwick

Hatton Adventure World offers a whole host of activities for all ages

Hatton Adventure World is set to launch an exciting, brand new water-based interactive game for the summer holidays.

Water Wars will see friends and family catapulting giant water balloons at each other during the hot summer months using their very own catapults.

Hatton Adventure World offers a whole host of activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained. Water battles will be organised at set times throughout the day with breaks in the afternoon so visitors can place bets on the hugely popular 'Sheep Racing' around the Hatton Grand National Track as well as take part in all the other activities.

Other attractions will take place in The Family Theatre will play host to magical puppet shows, birds of prey shows across the area, outdoor laser combat, orienteering and survival skills.
