The event, which featured 11 floats, three bands, a double decker bus, vintage tractors, and motorbikes, attracted more than 2,000 people to the town on Saturday afternoon.

Sarah Richards, carnival committee chairperson, said she was delighted with the way the day had gone.

She said: "It has been an amazing day. It could not have been better, the weather stayed great for us and there were a lot of people who came out to support us which was really good."

The procession included a number of spectacular floats, with Shifnal Scouts securing first overall prize, and best comical float, for their rendition of the Disney classic, Jungle Book.

Other highlights of the event were the Euro 2016 float from Newport Construction, described by Mrs Richards as "definitely the most rowdy".

The float was awarded the Mary Lacey Cup, which takes its name from the long-standing and respected carnival committee member who died in 2014.

The procession included several musical acts with a samba band joined by Birmingham Pipe and Drum Band, and Shrewsbury Air Training Corps.

Mrs Richards said that this year had been her first in the post of chairperson and she thanked all those who had helped put the event together.

She said: "I would like to say a big thank you to all the committee members, all the volunteers who have helped throughout the year.

"It would not be possible without them. It has been an amazing day."

She added: "It is my first year as chairperson so it was like a learning curve for me but everyone has been happy so I am really pleased with it."

More than 10 months of preparations have gone into putting the carnival together and Mrs Richards said that the turnout and the wonderful support from the public made it all worthwhile.
