The event, which was only resurrected four years ago, began with a spectacular procession through the streets on Saturday, complete with dancers and colour packed floats.

After winding its way to Severn Park the procession gave way to a host of carnival entertainment on the show field, including a children's fun fair.

Town Mayor Vanessa Voysey was enjoying the first carnival of her term in office and she said the had been delighted to see so many people out supporting the event.

"It was impressive to see so many people out in the town," she said.

"I thought the children did really well on the procession with their acrobatics through the town. It was a great procession, there was so much energy from the children."

Councillor Voysey said the carnival had become a central community event since it was relaunched.

She said: "I think it is something fun for the children and all the family, it's something to celebrate."

One of the floats that featured in the procession was Tasley Toddlers' take on the hit Disney film Frozen.

Around 20 children were on the float, which was collecting money in support of Asthma UK.

Trudy Winwood, leader of the group, said they had thoroughly enjoyed showing off their efforts in the procession.

She said: "The children loved it, seeing people's faces on the way through town, they absolutely loved it."

Around six months of preparation went into the float and Mrs Winwood said: "It is hard work but it's worth it because it is something the children really look forward to."

Another of the floats was a recreation of a school sports day, put together by Lisa Beards Fitness featuring more than 25 people dancing and strutting their stuff as the float made its way to the showground.

The group was raising money for Meningitis Now, inspired to support the cause after the death of 15 month old Fleur-Rose Allen from Highley.

Mrs Beards said there had been a great reaction to the float and that people had shown their support for the charity.

She said: "Everyone was really brilliant and because we had advertised what were collecting for people were super generous which was fantastic."

The packed show field included an entertainment stage, a host of stalls, and a fun fair.

Local Shropshire Councillor, Christian Lea, said it was an event that all of Bridgnorth could enjoy.

He said: "It is a wonderful community event that brings the whole out to see the procession. I felt this procession was fantastic and the best yet.

"It is a great day and I would like to thank everyone who worked to make the day such a resounding success."
