Welshpool Town Council's Canal and Food event will be held on July 2 on the Montgomery Canal through the town.

A group coracle racing event at 3pm will see local teams and groups compete in a series of coracle challenges on the Montgomeryshire Canal at Welshpool Wharf.

Meanwhile, back on dry land there will be food stalls set up on Church Street car park from 11.30am to 6pm, with activities at Welshpool Wharf starting from 1.30pm and running through to 7pm.

Councillor Malcolm Douglass, former mayor, said: "This is an occasion for all the town to really get involved and highlight the importance of the canal for both locals and tourists." He said coracles are provided and no previous experience is needed.

"If you would like to enter a team of four, at a cost of £10, contact Welshpool Town Council on (01938) 553142 or e-mail: town.clerk@welshpooltowncouncil.gov.uk

Other activities on the day include individual coracle racing, canoeing, angling and free boat trips with the Heulwen Trust.
