The park played host to Party in the Park on Saturday. But the live music was just one part of an action packed programme of entertainment, which also included dancing, face painting and art exhibitions.

Renowned story-teller Helen East also gave a bandstand performance as well as other story sessions in the afternoon.

Party in the Park was founded in 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Last year former celebrity couple Natasha Hamilton and Ritchie Neville were among the visitors to the free community party.

In previous years, if the sun has failed to shine, the event has moved indoors into Whitchurch Civic Centre.

But the weather was good enough to not make that necessary this time around.

This year the event marked the Queen's 90th birthday with a 'proms in the park' style event. There was obligatory flag-waving, and a pageant.

The event opened at noon and went on until 7pm.

Whitchurch Chamber of Trade ran a licensed bar once again and chairwoman Hilary Seward said: "It was a great day – 2016 is the fifth year Whitchurch are running the Party in the Park.

"This year it was with the added fun of celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday.

"Everyone seemed to really get into the spirit of things, we had plenty of people donning their red, white and blue and getting into the party spirit and having some fun.

"The Proms in the Park section celebrated the Queen's birthday and – thanks to town council funding – we were able to supply free Union Jack flags to give the feel and flourish of an actual proms. For a free event it was absolutely fantastic."
