Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt in the long-running soap opera, cut the ribbon on the new Poundland branch in Telford Shopping Centre.

Jack is one of the soap's longest-serving stars, havving played the character of David Platt since 2000.

A former 99p Store, the branch was the 200th to have been converted into a Poundland since the chain's takeover last year, and the celebrity was brought in to mark the milestone.

The rebranding of the stores has created an additional 345 jobs, which means that 17 per cent of the people working at the newly converted stores are new staff.

Jim McCarthy, CEO said: "I'm delighted to be celebrating another significant milestone in the 99p Stores conversion process.

"The 200 stores have been opened with speed and efficiency and I'm pleased with the response and support from all of our colleagues involved.

"The transformation of stores has been an extremely satisfying part of this process and I'm delighted to announce that we are well on track to complete the conversion of all of the 99p Stores in the time frames we set ourselves".

"We have regained a very positive reaction from customers who are excited about the converted stores and who are now enjoying the amazing value Poundland offers, every day, every week, every month, every year".

Poundland now employs almost 20,000 colleagues who work hard to deliver amazing value to millions of customers who are seeking top brands and quality own brand products.

At the opening, the first 100 customers each received a £5 voucher to spend in Poundland and a cup cake.
