Father Christmas decided to leave his reindeer at home when he visited Mere Park Garden Centre in Newport by vintage bus.

Centre manager Pam Shaw said Santa's arrival on Saturday proved to be very popular.

"It went very well and there was a nice atmosphere," she said.

"The Christmas barn was full and the Christmas market was very popular.

It worked really well this year because he was in an open top bus and when he was going through Newport everyone could see him. Last year, Santa arrived by fire engine."

She added: "We also have a Christmas market with all the different stalls like the markets you see in Birmingham and Manchester.

"There is a huge variety of food on offer, from mulled wine and pop corn, to sweet and savoury crepes. Clothes stalls are also available and people will be able to get quite a few different gifts.

"Children will also be able to have breakfast with Santa, and there is also a special visit where children will get a present and a sweet crepe.

"Visitors will also be able to have a Christmas dinner at the centre from December 1 until 23 in our restaurant.."
