The search has begun to find the lucky boy or girl who will get to switch on this year's Christmas lights display in one of the county towns.

Newport Town Council has opened a competition to all primary school-age children who live or go to school in the town. The winner will switch on the town's Christmas lights at an evening filled with entertainment next month.

To enter the competition, children are being asked to design a Christmas gift tag which should measure no bigger than 105mm by 148mm. Entries can be oblong, square or round.

Wendy Goodchild, of Newport Town Council, said:

"It is the intention to hang as many of the entries in our Christmas window as possible."

The closing date for entries is November 2, and they should be sent to the Guildhall.
