The Llangollen Eisteddfod is heading for a financial loss after disappointing ticket sales this year.

An urgent global appeal is being launched to raise £70,000 to secure the future of the international music event.

With the 70th anniversary on the horizon, organisers are confident the event has a bright long-term future but say they need the cash to get over their short-term difficulties.

Previous artists to have headlined the eisteddfod include performers as diverse at Luciano Pavarotti, Bryn Terfel, Status Quo and Jools Holland.

This year's eisteddford, which starts next week, will be the 69th year the festival will have been held consecutively since it was founded in the aftermath of the Second World War to promote peace and harmony.

Last week it was announced that the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be paying a visit to this year's eisteddfod. The royal couple will arrive by helicopter on the July 7 opening day of the event for the Parade of Nations led by eisteddfod president Terry Waite CBE.

The event has grown into one of Europe's premier music and dance events, where "Wales meets the world" and the town of Llangollen is turned into a cultural melting pot.

Supporters wishing to make a donation will be able to do so online via the Eisteddfod's website international-eisteddfod.co.uk or by using Gift Aid envelopes that will be available at all the concerts during the week.
