Artist Jennifer rises to big challenge for Shropshire exhibition

When Jennifer Harrison won a people's choice award at an art competition last year, it left her with a mission.

For while Mrs Harrison was thrilled that her painting of Venice had been the favourite of visitors to the annual Open Art event at Qube in Oswestry, her prize – her very own four-week exhibition at the gallery – was more than a little daunting.

For she had just eight paintings that would be suitable for such an exhibition and just a few months in which to create more.

The retired gift shop owner spent all winter creating 20 more paintings. With two that she had given to her sister as presents she eventually had 30 to hang in her exhibition.

The exhibition, which runs until Monday, has already won praise from those writing in the visitors' book at the centre on Oswald Road.

Mrs Harrison moved from Whitchurch to Oswestry last year and says painting is a hobby that she loves.

Pieces of art that she painted for sale in the gift shop have been bought to hang in homes across the country and even France and Florida.

"I began painting when I ran the shop with my daughter," she said. "When it was quiet I needed something to do and so I set up an area inside where I could paint. Customers would see what I was doing and ask if they could buy my work."

Her first paintings were mainly of seaside views, created from memories of days out at the coast. Others on display in the Qube gallery include a collection of wild hares and also of owls in the countryside.

Painting enough pictures for the exhibition has been a real labour of love.

"I have a studio in one of the bedrooms at home and have spent every available spare hour I could there," said Mrs Harrison.

"The children and grandchildren have spent time watching me and giving me their advice and even my husband has been involved, making all the frames himself in our hallway."

Mr Harrison, a jazz singer, said he had been more than happy to help as his wife had supported him in his musical career.

Gallery opening times are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays. Admission is free.
