Bryn Terfel gave this year's Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod a brilliant and bloodthirsty launch last night with a sensational production of Sweeney Todd at the Royal International Pavilion.

The Welsh bass-baritone made a triumphant return to the Eisteddfod stage for the first time since 2006 and with a cast that included Welsh opera stars Wynne Evans and Shan Cothi produced a brilliant performance of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway smash hit.

And while Terfel was at his operatic best, showing he could act as well as sing, the unknowns that he had chosen from auditions to perform alongside him proved to be equally popular with the sold out audience.

Making the most of their chance under the spotlight were 14-year-old Vale of Clwyd schoolboy Dewi Wykes, Solihull soprano Lauren Morris, 21, and tenor Berwyn pearce, great-nephew of another Welsh legend, Sir Geraint Evans.

In fact the highlight of the night - apart from the sheer presence of Terfel, was the heartfelt duet that Dewi, who played Toby had with Mrs Lovatt.

Sweeney Todd was the perfect start to the six-day Eisteddfod which today included the Parade of Nations through the streets of the town led by Eisteddfod President Terry Waite MBE.
