Never was the phrase ‘thought-provoking’ more relevant than when applied to R C Sherriff’s timeless play, Journey’s End.
Based on the author’s memoires of World War One, this award-winning production, under the outstanding direction of David Grindley, is set in March 1918 in the lead up to Operation Michael and looks at the horrors of conflict through the eyes of a group of officers.
The doom and gloom are unavoidable of course, but the script is witty and peppered with gentle humour as the men go about their everyday lives.
Shropshire actor, Graham Butler, gives an unforgettable performance as the new recruit, Raleigh, perfectly portraying the innocence of youth, soon wiped away for ever. His ability to move an audience is a rare talent.
While the whole cast give excellent performances, Simon Dutton as Osborne, the level-headed Lieutenant, stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Unmissable. Runs until Saturday.
