Daybreak? Daybroken, I think

Telly Talk: Another week, another bid to fix things. And this time it’s a change of name because bosses of Daybreak certainly don’t want the one ‘fans’ have given it to stick.

With plummeting viewing figures and a lack of any connection with hosts Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, the viewers’ name, “Daybroken”, is the only one that fits at the moment.

I decided on an early start this morning to try and catch the opening of the show for the first time in a while, just to see if the recent drubbing it’s getting is having an impact on the team brought in to lead a multi-million pound revamp.

And you know what? To give them some credit the gathering on the sofa did look as if they had settled in. They didn’t look half as nervous as they did in that first week and there wasn’t any particular sign they were feeling the strain of the reported clamouring behind the scenes to rescue something which everyone can see is dying on its feet.

To be fair there is a certain degree of professionalism in how the main pair are handling things. As she was voted presenter of the year this week Christine Bleakley maintained she was in no danger of quitting, putting the viewing figures down to “teething problems”. And despite his grumpy demeanour at least Chiles hasn’t kicked off in a Wayne Rooney-style strop at fans who have refused to back him even when his performance is disappointing.

But it is also why they have to go.

Daybreak was a failure from the very beginning and even as it and its team have settled it has not improved.

Reports this week that Adrian Chiles has been given a Sunday night chat show have led to speculation that he could be on the move. It really is one of the most positive stories to come out of Daybreak this week. It’s not that Chiles and Christine don’t belong on television, just a different show suited to their own particular talents. I think he would be great on a Clive Anderson-style of programme.

Then the time could come for a name change or new creative influences to be brought in, but let’s hope bosses do something and do it now. Trotting out the latest lifebelt each week may not be having an impact on the presenters but it is certainly irritating the viewer. And they really don’t need to do that anymore than they have already done.

How come Adrian Chiles is allowed to wear caual clothes when poor Ben Shepard got haules over the coals for presenting GMTV without wearing a tie? Bring the old gang back and you will get your viewers back but until then…hello BBC!!
