TV star Alexander Armstrong traces Shropshire roots
Friday 20th August 2010, 9:12AM BST.
The results can be seen on BBC One at 9pm on Monday, August 23.
Delving into the Shropshire family papers, Alexander found a letter from a direct ancestor over 200 years ago, complaining about the shortcomings of her wastrel eldest son, Edward.
Alexander discovers that Edward inherits a baronetcy from a cousin and that foul play is suspected.
Searching even further back following a fascinating trail of ancient documents Alexander finds out he has even more titled relatives descended from one of the richest families in Britain and intimately connected to the King.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “This is great news for Shropshire Archives and recognises the importance of these services, its excellent resources and professional and helpful staff. I look forward to watching this popular programme.”
Shropshire Archives holds records and documents relating to Shropshire, but can also help people get started in family history.

Do you think that ONE day, one of these celebs that they choose for these genealogy shows might have an entirely ordinary and boring family tree?
Nah – me neither.

well that has already happened with Michael Parkinson – it was deemed too boring to be televised so what are you complaining about. Wouldn’t you prefer to watch someone with interesting ancestors????!!!

I for one never watch the programme, all the people featured have more than enough money to fund researchers to carry out the work, again another abuse of the publicly funded celebrity bandwagon.

I always love watching this programme, so having Shropshire ties will make it particularly good viewing!
I personally loved the Bruce Forsyth episode. His face was a picture when he realise his great grandfather was a little promiscuous!

I think it is a fascinating programme, I just wish I could walk into a Record Office and find the staff have done all the hard work for me, ah well, dream on.
