World status for Telford trainee
Wednesday 26th October 2011, 10:11AM BST.
A talented Telford trainee has been named among the finest young carpenters in the world thanks to a high placing in an international competition.
Joe Price scooped fifth place in the carpentry category of the WorldSkills competition, which pits the finest examples of apprentice tradesmen from countries across the globe against one another.
His placing earned him the Medallion for Excellence at the world’s largest international skills competition for young people from around the world.
Mick O’Flynn, regional delivery manager for CITB-ConstructionSkills in the Midlands, said: “We are delighted that Joe has won a Medallion for Excellence at WorldSkills.
“He has worked extremely hard to achieve this, along with having the support of his employer, training provider and the Team UK staff.
“This prestigious competition has been a great opportunity to recognise and highlight the talent that is coming into the construction industry, as well as helping to inspire future generations of skilled, high-quality professionals for the industry.”
More than 1,000 competitors from more than 50 countries competed in 46 skills areas ranging from electronics to plumbing, web design, fashion and cabinet making.
Mr Price was one of only three construction trainees from the UK to win a medal in the built-environment sector of WorldSkills.
The competition, which was sponsored by CITB-ConstructionSkills, the sector skills council and industry training board for the sector, showcased the skills of those currently working in the built environment, as well as highlighting the career opportunities available to help attract the next generation into the profession.
