Apprentice Joe in global skills contest

Monday 26th September 2011, 2:00PM BST.

A former Shrewsbury College apprentice will go head-to-head with students from across the globe in the world’s largest education competition next month.

Site carpentry apprentice, Joe Price, 20, is preparing to compete at the WorldSkills London 2011 competition, which will feature young people from more than 50 countries.

Joe, who won the national title of Advanced Apprentice of the Year, is one of the three carpenters in the UK squad training for the competition.

“My course tutor first got me involved in the regional heats,” he said. “WorldSkills is a massive opportunity.”

Charmian Turner, head of marketing at the college, said its link with the WorldSkills competition demonstrated its commitment to helping students fulfill their potential.

“With Colleges Week 2011 launching today, we want to highlight what can be achieved through UK college training and the vital role colleges play in building Britain’s future.”

“More than a third of students go to university via a college like ours. Shrewsbury College has become much more than a vocational college, teaching qualifications across a wide range of subjects and at all levels.

“A record number of Higher Education students attended at our annual cap and gown ceremony in July.”
