Youngsters graduate from Broseley training scheme
Tuesday 30th August 2011, 3:26PM BST.
A project set up to help vulnerable young people on a Telford estate will this week celebrate its success in getting them into work.
The Wyldwoods Project in Broseley was set up to help young people with the transition from secondary school into work or further education.
The course, from the European Social Fund’s Neet Engagement programme, saw young people, most with special or learning needs, get the skills they needed to land a job or course place.
Tomorrow a celebration day will include a presentation to each learner to mark their achievements in front of their parents and other members of the community.
Project manager Karen Harrison said: “We worked very closely with Carol Goodfellow, of Madeley Connexions, who had been looking for an opportunity for a group of young people she was working with from Southall School in Dawley and Bridge School in Hadley.
The groups began meeting at the beginning of the summer holiday and rapidly gained greater confidence in their ability to progress to further education or part time voluntary work.
“The young people involved have really surprised and delighted us and have taken part in a whole host of activities from papier mache to shelter building and site health and safety awareness.
“They have shown real employability skills by doing regular form filling to keep a record of their activities and evaluations of each session. All of this will help them towards the more grown up world of further education or voluntary work placements.”
Councillor Paul Watling, at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “I am delighted to learn of the success of this project, which has helped a group of vulnerable young people to develop their confidence and look forward to the future with more confidence.”
