Blog: Save money, hunt rabbits

Rabbits make for a cheap and tasty meal, says Henry Mackley. Would a hare taste as good?

Job-seeking blogger Henry Mackley is back from his holidays full of fresh ideas on how to save some money – hunt your own food:

Well, that was a pleasant little spot of R&R.

Sandwiched between the holiday retreats of the MD of Rolls Royce, the chief exec of British Aerospace and the Dimblebys, the Dart estuary is not a place where one wants to bang on about being unemployed.

So for a few days I didn’t. I mean, what would the housekeeper have said?

Whilst I was in Devon – in between fishing, drinking, fine dining and flirting with the staff – I found time to do a little shooting. The place where I was staying had 80 acres overrun with randy rabbits.

For the poor and needy (with a twelve-bore and a few acres at their disposal), randy rabbits equal free food.

If not free, rabbits (randy or otherwise) are as cheap as you like. My butcher in Ludlow sells them skinless and gutless for about two quid a pop.

If you want to take their clothes off and pull their innards out yourself, you’ll be looking at pence.

I know that these days unemployed people are supposedly too busy to cook: Twelve children to look after; lottery tickets to buy; Sky TV subscription to be paid; new X-Box games to try out; yadda yadda…But we should be prioritising.

Sell the X-Box, have fewer children, cancel Sky (you know it’s all rubbish), apply for a license and buy a shotgun.

Then, all you need to do is to find someone with a bit of land and then you can blast the hell out of anything potentially edible that moves. In no time at all your gun will have paid for itself.

We live in Shropshire – you must know someone with some acreage.

So, as per my article last week, my hot tip for thrifty unemployed food is to either kill your own or find a butcher who can supply you with vermin.

Squirrels also make for fairly good eating, but perhaps we’ll save that for next week…

And you’ll need something green to go with your vermin, so plant some seeds. A pack of lettuce seeds cost about £1.50 and you can plant them anywhere, and they’ll see you in salad until at least November. Makes sense doesn’t it?

What has the killing of cute fluffly bunnies got to do with you jobseeking?! you’re using valuable jobseeking time at the taxpayers expense!

Tongue firmly in cheek as I write this comment!

Wish you the best of luck on your search :-)

I think it’s great he’s encouraging people to get shot guns.

Have you not seen the majority of people at the job centre? Would you really want them to own a shot gun?

I doubt that jobseekers could afford a shotgun and even if they could, who wants to go for a countryside ramble and risk getting fired at by some idiot with a gun, trying to save pence and risking lives in the process.

Whats the point of bothering with squirrels? How many people would they feed?

Henry M is obviously lusting for blood.
