A headteacher has resigned from her post just months after her school was placed in special measures by inspectors.

Powys County Council said today that Suzanne Foster, from Ysgol Maesydre in Welshpool, had decided to leave her post.

Mrs Foster, who has been headteacher at the school since April 2008, was suspended with immediate effect in October, in an attempt by Governors to ‘restore confidence’ in the school.

It had been put in special measures by inspection body Estyn.

She was also suspended in February this year pending an investigation into allegations made against her, but was cleared to return to work later that month.

But today the council said Mrs Foster had decided to leave Maesydre School with effect from December 31.

As the school has already broken up for the Christmas holidays, Mrs Foster has effectively already left her position and will not return to the school.

John Evans, communications manager at Powys County Council, said Mrs Foster send her best wishes to those linked with the school.

He said: “Mrs Foster sends children, staff and parents her best wishes for the future, and the governors wish Mrs Foster all the best for her future.”

He added that Lynette Lovell will continue to act as headteacher until Easter, giving the governors chance to recruit a replacement.

Following both of Mrs Foster’s suspensions, parents at the school gates praised her for her efforts.

Speaking in February, one parent, who did not wish to be named, said: “Mrs Foster has the genuine best interests of the pupils at the school.

“She is a straightforward lady who speaks her mind and is a strong leader and I hope the matter can be resolved quickly and we can get her back to doing what she does best– running this wonderful school.”

Mrs Foster was not available for comment.
